The Universal Works Wool Fleece story began with a simple piece of fabric. In 2017, a fabric agent sent the brand a swatch from a small Italian knitting mill, originally developed for sportswear and outerwear. Universal Works took the fabric and turned it into what would become one of the brand’s most recognisable pieces: the Wool Fleece Cardigan.
Made from a wool and polyester blend, the knitted fleece combines warmth with a relatively light feel, while the construction gives the fabric a distinctive texture and structure. Over time, Universal Works has refined the fit and details, while also switching the polyester content to recycled polyester as production volumes increased.
What started as a single cardigan has grown into a wider Wool Fleece collection, spanning cardigans, liners, gilets and jackets. The fabric has become closely associated with Universal Works’ approach to clothing: practical, functional and rooted in workwear, but designed to work well beyond its original purpose.
Now produced in Portugal, the Wool Fleece range has become one of Universal Works’ defining fabrics. Seasonal colour changes keep the collection evolving, while the underlying idea remains the same, a versatile, hard-working fabric that sits comfortably between knitwear and outerwear.
